BIO

Fred Brathwaite pka, Fab 5 Freddy emerged in the late 1970’s as a New York City graffiti artist who was one of the first to exhibit his paintings internationally. Along with friends and contemporaries, Futura 2000, Keith Haring, Lee Quinones and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Fab was a key player in New York’s 1980’s downtown cultural scene instrumental in elevating graffiti into a disruptive movement that would eventually give birth to street art. His early art work was recently on exhibit at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in a show titled, “Writing The Future: Basquiat & The Hip Hop Generation. Born in the Bed-Stuy section of Brooklyn New York his introduction to pop culture came courtesy of a name check on new wave group Blondie’s 1980’s pop hit, “Rapture”. In addition to his visual art, Fab co-produced, starred in and composed the music for the cult classic film, Wild Style and went on to direct music videos for numerous Hip Hop stars like Snoop, Nas, Queen Latifah and others. From the late 1980’s into the mid 90’s he was the original host of YO! MTV Raps, the groundbreaking TV show that took hip hop culture global. Today he continues to make and exhibit his visual art and produce and direct projects for film and television. His recent film released in 2019 is a feature length documentary he produced and directed for Netflix titled, “Grass is Greener” that examines the history of cannabis, music and criminal justice in America. Inspired by all he learned making that film he developed a social equity cannabis brand that went on sale in July of  2021 called,

B NOBLE which is now available in ten states.

Mr Fab Five Freddy, I watched your movie and thought it was the best movie about cannabis history ever. As a half Jewish American I was proud that Nixon suspected Jews and that the Mighty Mezz was Jewish. The importance of that it had to do with Jazz music and all the people you brought together, "The Grass is Greener" should be required viewing. I loved Cab Calloway since I was a kid, it made me want to be a visual artist, maybe even a cartoonist, although I didn't succeed really. I did go to art school but schools have this thing where they won't give me a diploma. My mom's first cousin was Bill Ayers, he blew up stuff with dynamite and was one of the Weathermen. I've always felt conflicted about that. But after watching this I kinda felt like him, "kill all the white people, we need to just kill all the white people". I mean, I have epilepsy that doesn't respond to medications. Cannabis was discovered to help it before 1900. It was made illegal medically because of racism. Not because of medical proof that it didn't work or was dangerous. Although, none of the over 70 medications used on epilepsy really work to fix it. Still, that should be illegal now, I just feel like they should be arrested and put in prison and killed like the nazis for their War on Drugs. I was so moved by your movie and stuff.

Maybe I'm just not a very good artist.... but keep that weed in the streets, right?

Anyway, I want to say, that what you have to say is important. This is the history that matters. They can't erase it and pretend that everything is ok. I was watching it again, thinking there's this hearing, and how depressing it is, that the DEA has all this control. Abolish the DEA man! Abolish the Controlled Substances Act! Why aren't drug laws illegal under title 2 of the Civil Rights Act? I mean, it is a public accommodation. Healthcare. And their little health issue thing falls apart. I want cannabis access for kids with epilepsy. It's a hard disease to live with. But I live with it, and I love hip hop and the history of black music, and it breaks my heart, that people could even hate music, something that I can't do, something that's intelligent and beautiful. I mean, I have tears, watching that movie. I'm serious. I feel like no one is taking this health thing seriously because epilepsy is such a weird disease, not even doctors understand it. So when I go to them, and have them say they're not into weed, it's like, they're just so stupid. I still get a medical card for it but I also still take my medications, they are allowed to keep people on too many drugs at the same time they are allowed to force people off of drugs. I'm on so many medications for it now. 3 different pills, and a marijuana card. Needless to say, I do not drink alcohol. Sorry if I ruined your website.

BRO... curaleaf is a trash company, treating their customers, product, and employees like garbage. To park a company associated with justice, hip hop culture, or the word/name 'Noble' is an absolute joke, and quite possibly the biggest facepalm of all time.

I hope one day all Yo! MTV Raps episodes will be available online - somehow. I collect music videos thanks to this show. As the years go by, more and more music videos are becoming readily available in high quality (such as uncompressed MOV files, or an excellent example of The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Juicy” video on YT, which is true 4K - I also hope that, in my lifetime, I’ll get to see more 4K remastered videos). Peace from Hungary!

Halfway through the audio book. Brilliant. Fred reads it too in that iconic voice that we grew up on with Yo.
